Radicofani has for centuries regulated passage between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Latium Papal territories. The importance of commerce and travel along the Via Francigena explains some of the power wielded by both Radicofani and its bandit- baron Ghino di Tacco, mentioned by Dante in his Divine Comedy. Later the fort became the possession of the Republic of Siena and finally, in 1559, of Cosimo I Grand Duke of Tuscany. Built sometime before the year 1000 and then repeatedly remodeled in the 16th and 19th centuries, it Rocca tower-museum is a 20-minute walk up from Radicofani. At 37 m (47 feet), it offers great views over Val d’Orcia, Monte Amiata, the Apennines, Lake Trasimeno and Lake Bolsena.
